One of the most frequently performed zarzuelas in the repertoire tells the love story between the witty barber Lamparilla and Paloma, a seamstress. Their encounters and separations, courtships and romantic escapades become intertwined with political intrigues in which they themselves, quite unexpectedly, become deeply involved: the Marquesita del Bierzo seeks to overthrow Minister Grimaldi in order to install Count Floridablanca in his place.
