One of the most frequently performed zarzuelas in the repertoire, it tells the story of the love between the roguish barber Lamparilla and Paloma, a seamstress. Their comings and goings, courtship, and romantic adventures are interwoven with the political intrigues in which they unexpectedly become deeply involved: the Marquise of Bierzo seeks to overthrow Minister Grimaldi in order to promote the Count of Floridablanca.
